Prof. Marcin Zaniew, MD

Vice-Rector for the Medical College

Academic teacher, scientist and physician, specialist in pediatrics and nephrology, Professor of medical sciences.

Associated with the Medical College of the University of Zielona Góra since 2018. Currently, he is the Head of the Department of Pediatrics (since 2018) and the Department of Pediatrics with Sub-Divisions of Endocrinology, Diabetology and Pediatric Nephrology at the University Hospital in Zielona Góra (since 2022). In 2018-2022, a representative of the Hospital's board for the establishment of the Mother and Child Health Center. In 2019-2024, Deputy Director of the Institute of Medical Sciences for education.

He graduated from medical studies in 2000 at the Karol Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences in Poznań. In 2001-2005, he was a PhD student at the same university. In 2005, he defended his doctoral thesis entitled: The influence of vitamin E and N-acetylcysteine ​​on the antioxidant potential, apoptosis and selected immunological parameters of peripheral blood lymphocytes in children and adolescents with end-stage renal failure. He habilitated in 2018 at the Poznań University of Medical Sciences with the thesis entitled: Clinical and genetic aspects of selected proximal tubulopathies – Dent disease and Lowe syndrome. He obtained the title of Professor of medical sciences in 2023. For a long time, he was associated with Poznań, initially as a doctoral student (2001-2005), then as an assistant and assistant professor at the Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Nephrology in Poznań. In 2010-2011, he completed specialist training in nephrology at the Department of Pediatrics, Nephrology and Toxicology with a Dialysis Unit, SPS ZOZ "ZDROJE" in Szczecin. After obtaining the title of specialist in nephrology, he was employed at the SZOZ nad Matką i Dzieckiem in Poznań (in the years 2012-2018).

His main scientific and clinical interests include issues related to genetically determined kidney and urinary tract diseases. Co-founder and coordinator of the Polish Registry of Inherited Tubulopathies (POLtube). His main scientific and organizational achievement is the creation of a network of national centers cooperating within the POLtube registry as well as within genetic projects implemented in cooperation with foreign research centers. The fruit of this cooperation are publications in the most renowned journals, such as: the New England of Journal of Medicine, Nature Genetics, Nature Communications, the American Journal of Human Genetics, Kidney International, Journal of American Society of Nephrology, Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation, Pediatric Nephrology.

Member of national and international scientific societies, including the Polish Pediatric Society, the Polish Society of Pediatric Nephrology and the International Society (IPNA) and the European Society for Pediatric Nephrology (ESPN). Member of ESPN working groups and a group of experts preparing recommendations for some rare diseases. Since 2023, chairman of the Zielona Góra Branch of the Polish Pediatric Society.

For his scientific activity, he was twice awarded the title of Outstanding Scientist by the Polish Society of Pediatric Nephrology. In 2020, he received the Bronze Medal from the Society for his activities in the field of rare nephrological diseases. This year he was honored with the title of Fellow of ESPN, which is awarded by the European Society for Pediatric Nephrology for his contribution to the development of pediatric nephrology in Poland and in Europe. He has been awarded numerous rector's awards. In 2023 he was awarded the Medal of the National Education Commission.
